UK Logs Direct came about because we personally process about 15 tons of hardwood every season and we have been burning this amount for 15 years. Because we had no fallen timber we had to buy it in, what seemed like a simple idea turned into a nightmare . The first load we cut by hand, with chain saws and a hydraulic log splitter and it was very hard work. Because we had no fallen timber we had to buy it in again. Our normal supplier could not easily find hardwood and because we did not have as much time as normal we decided to rent a log processor.
The first problem was finding the correct diameter of logs to be less than 14" to go through the processor. (for those who aren't familiar with this piece of equipment, it cuts splits and dumps the logs into a big pile). After two months our wood supplier (one of the largest wood merchants-processors in the North East of England ) finally sourced 26 tons of hardwood from Southern Scotland . Along with a sizeable bill came a note of caution from their director that this may not be able to be repeated as the demand for hardwood from all sectors was increasing and most country estates and other suppliers to them were asking to keep all their hardwood for themselves. We spent 4 days loading the processor with 8ft lengths via a JCB, we had numerous problems sharpening chains, fixing jumped chains, log jams, hydraulic seizures, the list was endless. All we can say was it was quicker than doing 26 tons by hand to create logs.
The logs were good quality and soon the word got round , and hey presto people starting asking for dumpy bags and trailers loads, and all they wanted was hard wood ! With our stockpile running out we tried to order more to fulfil demand but there was none to be had & we were told to try "Kiln Dried Logs"
We tracked down various suppliers and finally settled on a couple of reputable, kiln dried log manufacturers who process their own kiln dried timber, particularly Ash, Oak & Birch. Our suppliers are regulated for sustainable forestry and various other ecological certificates.
Our objective was to ensure if we were going to launch a business in an E Commerce environment that our logs would be the best available, and as we will also be using them on a daily basis we could constantly monitor the quality.
15 years ago the internet was in it's infancy and we were left to fend for ourselves and really didn't have a clue about what timber to use in our first log stove .
